Quiz Answers

Here are the answers to yesterday’s short quiz:

  1. Brian Clough was manager of Leeds United for 44 days. How long was Jock Stein’s reign at the club? Also 44 days. Stein left to become manager of Scotland. Role model to an entire generation of football bosses, by the time he became took over Leeds a near-fatal car accident and otherwise failing health meant that he probably wasn’t quite the same man who saw Celtic into two European Cup Finals in 4 years. Neither, by that time, was Clough himself, for rather different reasons.
  2. Who was the first former England captain to manage a club to a European Cup Final? Jimmy Armfield took Leeds United to the 1975 Final, which they lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich in hugely controversial circumstances, as you’ll see below. Leeds fans rioted after the final whistle. Armfield generously gave all the credit for the achievement to his players, who were still very much Revie’s team plus one or two surviving Clough signings. Clough had already taken Derby County to the European Cup semi-final, where his team, too, were upended by bizarre, possibly corrupt refereeing.
  3. Which football club was managed by two former England players on its way to a European Cup Final? The previous answer is also Leeds – in the form of Clough and Armfield in 74-75. A third, Don Revie, was principally responsible for the makeup of the team as we’ve already seen.
  4. Name two England managers who have taken clubs from promotion from the old Second Division to runners-up spot in Division One the following year. Don Revie with Leeds United in 1963-5, and Graham Taylor with Watford in 1982-4. Neither man really deserves their other shared distinction of having failed to take England to a World Cup Finals.
  5. Finally, give the wording of the curse placed on Brian Clough’s former clubs. To say nothing of Don Revie’s. George Szirtes’ answer in comments previously is almost certainly correct, although he appears to have corrected the original’s spelling.
